Serve With Love

Welcome back to Balance With Dr. Shola!
I talk about being determined, focused, working hard, and reaching for your dreams, a lot. However there is one overarching theme that I need to interject. In fact this should be our primary motivation.
What is it? Love
If you are in a service industry, love the people you serve even if your industry/ job/ working conditions are less than perfect.
When I was practicing primary care, I loved my patients to bits even as I […]

5 Tips For Relationship Success

I hope that you are enjoying your PDF’s and most importantly applying them to your life. Today I would like to share a few relationship tips, that can ensure success in your relationships. I am talking specifically about non-marital relationships, although some of these can apply in marriage too.

1. You are equal. All men are created equal, in humanity. No one is superior to another person in their humanity, self worth, importance, and God’s love for them. Remembering this […]

10 Tips For A Balanced Life

Remember your five pillars and prioritize them: physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, relational. This is the foundation for a fulfilled life.
Seek peace. Stay away from drama and strife. If you need to stop hanging out with certain people for a season, that is ok.
Do not allow yourself to  “binge” on negative thoughts. Stop them, before they become a permanent fixture.
Work on your stress management techniques. Do not let stress the better of you
Refuse to be defined by your tragedies. Grief […]

How To Survive A Break-Up Without A Break-Down

Have you suffered a break up of a romantic relationship? Here are some tips to help you get through it. Remember time is a healer
1. Grieve your loss:
Don’t pretend that it doesn’t hurt. Don’t pretend that you are strong. Don’t pretend that you don’t cry. Take time to mourn, remember the good times but do not forget the bad times. There was a reason that you broke up. Do not wallow in grief or let it take over […]

A Open Letter To An Engaged Couple

Dear Engaged Couple,
Congratulations on your engagement! I am so glad to be able to write this letter to you and I’m happy to be a part of your experience. You see, I have had the opportunity to counsel many of you over the years. It is great to see young people starting on this journey called marriage. I love being married to my husband, Dozie. We have been married for ten years and our love for each other is […]

To The Child

This is a poem that I recited for the United For Kids Foundation fundraiser in Chicago. This foundation was set up to improve the quality of life and education for public school children in Lagos.
My child,
Can you see,
In every tear that falls from my eye,
Every meal that I lovingly prepare,
Every red cent that these hands work to provide for you;
Every prayer that goes out from my lips to heaven;
Every spanking and time-out,
Every kiss and every hug,
Every time I […]

14 Tips for “Romancing” Your Spouse

Romance is essential to any marriage. You do not want to wake up one morning and find that you barely have any feelings for your spouse. Additionally, romance is what makes marriage fun. It is what makes the difference between a spouse and a room mate (sex does that too, but that is another story).
The idea is that romance is supposed to be thoughtful, fun, creative and not necessarily practical.
1. Find out your spouse’s love language and speak […]

Our Love

If you think you don’t like poetry, you haven’t met the right poem. I hope this is the right one for you. Enjoy!
We walk:
Hand in hand, across the sands of time,
Sharing, strengthening, supporting;
Moving ahead towards our destiny.
We dance:
Cheek to cheek, across the dance floor of experience,
Growing, gaining, giving life our all;
Twirling to the songs of our hearts.
We laugh:
Loud and long, at the comedies life brings,
Relaxing, playing, going on new adventures;
And chuckling at our own private jokes.
